XL Group plc (“XL”) has taken occupancy of its offices at 8 St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2.
XL acquired the Georgian townhouse in 2012, which will house Dublin-based Insurance and Reinsurance teams as well as corporate functions.
The four story, red brick building dates back to 1795 and has a “Protected Structure” status. It occupies a prominent position on the north side of St Stephen’s Green which has long been one of Ireland's best-known Victorian public parks. XL commissioned local firm, RKD Architects to provide design services so that the building, which had been empty for almost a decade, could be transformed for a modern, global company which values innovation and technology.
Commenting, XL’s CEO Mike McGavick said: “Moving into this new building marks a great day for XL. The project has been a culmination of much hard work by the project team, the architects, city planners and many local craftsmen all working to transform an old building for a new use – respecting the building’s history while creating an advanced office location.
“The move to 8 St. Stephen’s Green is also significant for XL as it sees all our Dublin based colleagues now housed under one roof. This represents not only cost efficiencies but also helps us share our corporate culture across the company.”
Justin Treacy, Director at RKD Interiors said: “Our vision for the project was to design a 21st century office building supporting the requirements of XL while respecting the sensitive nature of the protected structure.
“Design detail, materials and workmanship had to be of a standard that would be commensurate with the generous spaces of the original building. Working areas are treated in a contemporary manner while meeting spaces are designed to reflect the Georgian architecture with modern detailing. A restrained but tailored approach to materials and color is used throughout to reflect both the XL brand values and the original architectural detail. In all, a spectacular repurposing of one of the most important buildings on St Stephen’s Green has been achieved.”
Concluding, Mr. McGavick said: “Ultimately the project represents a celebration of the old and the new and we hope the building will serve XL for years to come.”
